ABSTRACT
Introduction: This pilot study explores the value of graphic projective techniques as symbolic mediators in children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), in the context of limited existing research and the predominance of approaches focused on verbal language. Method: A qualitative descriptive-interpretative study with a multiple case design was conducted with a sample of 20 participants aged between 6 and 19 years, all with ASD diagnoses confirmed using the ADOS-2. The House-Tree-Person (HTP) and Person-in-the-Rain techniques were used as expressive devices, and both graphic productions and associated verbalizations were recorded. A reflexive thematic analysis was carried out, complemented by descriptive analyses and Fisher’s exact tests to explore associations between clinical variables and patterns of symbolisation.
Results: Four main themes were identified: literal symbolisation (60%), relational distress (73%), identity construction (20%), and differences in expressive style (40%).
Conclusion: The findings suggest that drawing constitutes a meaningful channel for emotional and relational expression and a useful tool for guiding psychological intervention in individuals with ASD.
