Epidemiological profile of suicide attempts among adolescents: a retrospective study at the Mohammed VI University Hospital in Marrakesh (2021–2025)

ABSTRACT
Objective. To establish the epidemiological, clinical and outcome profile of suicide attempts among adolescents managed in the child and adolescent psychiatry department of Mohammed VI University Hospital in Marrakech. Methods. Retrospective ingle-centre study of 131 adolescents aged 10 to 17 years, hospitalised or followed for a suicide attempt between January 2021 and December 2025. Data were collected from medical records and analysed with SPSS version 27. Results. Mean age was 14.71 ± 1.38 years with a marked female predominance (82.4 %). The most frequent methods were medication overdose (40.5 %) and violent methods (53.4 %). Family conflict was the main precipitating factor (63.4 %). Chronic depression was found in approximately 40 % of cases. Intensive outpatient care was provided in 61.8 % of cases, with a favourable outcome in the majority of patients. Conclusion. Suicide attempts among adolescents in Marrakech occur in a multifactorial context of vulnerability dominated by depressive disorders and family dysfunction. Strengthening primary and secondary prevention, as well as improving care coordination, is required.
