Abstract

ABSTRACT

Review questionIs there some type of interaction or association between the adult attachment and the relations of friendship?

Objective: Our aim has been to update the bibliographical knowledge in relation to the possible interactions and / or associations between the different styles of attachment and the relations of friendship between the adults of both sexes.

Methods: A search has been realized in the following databases: Pubmed, Embase, Pubpsych, Scopus, Psycoscience and Proquest (ProQuest Psychology Journals and ProQuest Social Science Journals), SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online) using the key words: adult attachment, friend and Friendly. There have been excluded all the articles which aim was not expressly to study the relations between the adult attachment and the friendship, excluding, therefore the loving relations. 21 publications met the inclusion criteria.

Results: Two investigations refer to internal working models and their relationship to friendship (validation of the technique based on the AAI and its relationship with working models and, the second, study the parent-child relationships, working models and how these impact in the friendship ). As for research focusing on attachment styles and friendship, we see a wide variety of issues and assessment instruments.

Conclusions: The style of attachment and friendship are related to the quality of the relationship, intimacy, conflict resolution, satisfaction, support, self- stigma and psychological wellfare. People with secure attachment tend to have better friendships than those with a style insecure, avoidant or preoccupied attachment.
